Across our 50th anniversary year, the University held celebrations at each of its European centres, as well as in the USA and Southeast Asia, to celebrate its international alumni. These events also gave alumni the chance to share their favourite memories of the University.
A series of celebration events took place in seven states; each attracted a high number of Kent graduates. The 50th anniversary team hosted each event.
Professor Roger Vickerman, the University’s Dean for Europe, joined alumni at the British Embassy in Washington DC. Current Kent students who are undertaking placements at Cisco also attended the San Francisco event.
Kent alumnus, Johnnie Raines (Eliot, 1990) hosted a masquerade ball at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in LA, where four alumni were reunited for the first time in 15 years.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow spoke at the Academy Palace about Kent's first 50 years, and its ambitions for the next 50.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Keith Mander spoke at the British Ambassador’s Residence about Kent's first 50 years, and its ambitions for the next 50.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Keith Mander spoke at the Rome campus about Kent's first 50 years, and its ambitions for the next 50. Professor Tom Henry delivered a presentation on Kent in Rome.
During a private visit to the Galleria Borghese, University of Kent students and Professor Tom Henry introduced selected works.
Staff, students and alumni shared their memories of Kent and caught up with University friends at the British Embassy Residence in Athens.
The University held celebration events with alumni in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong.
At the event in Hong Kong, Professor Eddy Fong, President of the Hong Kong Alumni Association, welcomed guests and spoke about his experiences as Kent’s first student from Hong Kong in 1966.
The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow, spoke at both events.
Malaysia’s Star newspaper published news of the Kuala Lumpur event, and included an article about the University’s research, and the South China Morning Post interviewed Professor Goodfellow about maintaining student diversity in higher education.
