- Professor Michael Calnan
Professor Michael Calnan joined the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research in 2007 from the Medical Research Council's Health Services Research Collaboration at the University of Bristol, where he was Professor of Medical Sociology and Senior Scientist (2000 - 2007).
From 1994-2000, Michael was Professor and Director of the Centre for Health Services Studies at the University of Kent, convenor of the MA in Health Studies. and was involved in establishing and directing the WHO- Euro Collaborating Centre for Patient Rights.
Professor Calnan completed his PhD at the University of Kent, his BSc at the University of London and his MSc at the University of Bristol.
He has published extensively about a range of health-related issues and his books include ‘Health and Illness: the lay perspective’(1987),), ‘The Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease: prospects, politics and policies’(1991), ‘Going Private: why people use private health care(1993); ‘Modern Medicine: lay perspectives(1996); ‘Health, Medicine and Society., Key Theories, Future Agendas(2000)’; Work Stress: the making of a modern epidemic'(2002); Trust Matters in Health Care (2008) ; Trusting on the Edge 2012); Health Policy, Power and Politics: Sociological Insights (2020) and Power, Policy and the Pandemic (2022).

Current research interests include violence against doctors in India; life scientists trust in scientific data; sociology of vaccination and epidemics; innovative health care technologies; policies addressing social inequalities in health and privatisation and health care.
UKRI Funded Project 2022-25 Doctors under siege: Making sense of the rising incidence of violence against doctors in India. To answer the research question ‘What do the rising incidents of violent attacks on doctors in India imply for the social contract between the medical profession and society?’, an exploratory, qualitative study using in-depth interviews (complemented by media analysis) has been conducted amongst purposefully selected participants to understand how various societal actors, particularly those directly and indirectly involved in the violent encounters, experience and understand these acts of violence(see publications).
