Nicola Grove trained as a teacher and then as a speech and language therapist, with 40 years experience in the field of learning disabilities.
Her doctoral research was in augmentative communication, exploring sign language use by nonverbal hearing children. She worked at the Institute of Education and at City University Department of Language and Communication Science, before being seconded to the British Institute of Learning Disabilities to set up a project to train adults with learning disabilities as community storytellers.
This successful venture led to the formation of a charity, Openstorytellers, which she ran for some years before funding was obtained to employ a director and adminstrative team. Nicola now works as a freelance trainer, consultant and researcher, in the fields of narrative, cultural history of learning disability and education.
Since then, as founder and first director of the Charity Openstorytellers, she has worked nationally and internationally in the field of narrative development and intervention. She currently works as a freelance researcher and consultant.
