Jack's journey began in 2014 when he started his undergraduate degree in Sociology at the University of Kent. Jack achieved a First Class and managed to win multiple academic awards including Best Performance in Sociology, a Social Sciences Faculty Prize and the Aurelio Manente Prize (Highest scoring sociologist).
Jack was awarded an ESRC 1+3 scholarship to study for a Master’s in Social Research Methods and PhD. He studied for his Master’s in 2017/2018 and his thesis was entitled 'Ethical Ethnography: The Covert Overt Continuum'.
Jack is a part of the School’s ‘Work and Economic Life’ research cluster, interested in economic sociology, and is currently investigating the gig economy.
The gig economy is vast and includes well-known companies such as Uber and Deliveroo. These companies are operating in a socio-economic climate that is “revolutionising” the nature of the contemporary workplace. With innovation comes new challenges.
Jack's PhD is entitled: “From a ‘job for life’ to a gig economy: Rethinking Work, Time and Economic Life”. His project is an interrogation of the contemporary economy and workplace, using current methodological and conceptual tools to conduct his research.
