- Dr Maria Gallagher
Dr Maria Gallagher is a Lecturer in Cognition and Neuroscience in the School of Psychology. She completed her PhD in 2019 at Royal Holloway, University of London, investigating visuo-vestibular conflicts in Virtual Reality and Cybersickness. Dr Gallagher completed a three-year postdoctoral position at Cardiff University, investigating audio-visual motion integration during active self-motion. Her primary interests are in vestibular-multisensory integration for self-motion perception.
Maria's research interests are centred on the integration of vestibular (balance) system signals with other sensory modalities to perceive the self and the world around us. In particular, Maria is currently working on research investigating the impact of vestibular-multisensory conflicts in Virtual Reality. Specifically, this research will enable us to understand the mechanisms behind cybersickness and VR-induced aftereffects, improving the usability and uptake of this important technology.

Current PhD students
I would welcome any students who have an interest in the vestibular system and its impact on perception and cognition. I am particularly interested in projects investigating the impact of Virtual Reality on the brain, and would be happy to discuss supervision of PhD projects.
