Yafeng Shan is Assistant Professor of Philosophy of Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He received his PhD from University College London.
His books include Doing Integrated History and Philosophy of Science (2020), New Philosophical Perspectives on Scientific Progress (2022), Examining Philosophy Itself (2023), Evidential Pluralism in the Social Sciences (co-authored with Jon Williamson, 2023), Philosophical Foundations of Mixed Methods Research: Dialogues between Researchers and Philosophers (2023), and Alternative Approaches to Causation: Beyond Difference-making and Mechanism (2024).
Yafeng is mainly interested in the philosophy of science, epistemology, and metaphilosophy. He has developed an exemplar-based approach to scientific development, in which scientific progress and scientific practice should be construed in terms of usefulness of exemplary practice. Currently he is working on understanding and progress in the social sciences.
