Research based on a time-lapse film of everyday life in London’s Billingsgate market has won a University sociologist a national prize for innovation and excellence.
Dr Dawn Lyon, of the University’s School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research, used a series of time-lapse photographs and sound recordings in a montage to create a short film that revealed the extraordinary everyday rhythms of the famous fish market.
For the first time, the complex interplay and flow of different elements of market life could be observed, analysed and understood.
Judges in the annual SAGE Prize for Innovation/Excellence awarded Dr Lyon first prize in the Sociological Research Online category.
The SAGE Prize is awarded each year by the British Sociological Association (BSA) for one paper in each of the BSA’s four journals. Dr Lyon wins £250 worth of SAGE books or a free annual individual subscription to the journal of her choice.
