Postgraduate Festival prize winners announced

Prizes have been awarded to Kent staff and students across faculties as part of the 2018 Postgraduate Festival.

The event, running from June 18-22, was opened by Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Karen Cox alongside Dean for the Graduate School Professor Paul Allain.

As well as a series of opening day talks and presentations, the day ended with the award of eight prizes to staff and students in the following categories:

  • Postgraduate Research Prize – Social Sciences: Nicole Brown, PhD in Sociology
  • Postgraduate Research Prize – Humanities: Daniel Belteki, PhD in History
  • Postgraduate Research Prize – Sciences: Farhana Ferdousi Liza, PhD in Computer Science
  • Research Degree Supervisor: Professor Nicola Shaughnessy, Director of Research, School of Arts
  • School Director of Graduate Studies: Professor Donatella Alessandrini, Co-Director Graduate Studies (Research), Kent Law School
  • Exceptional Achievements in Support of PG Education and Research – Sciences: Claire Carter, Postgraduate and Research Support Officer, School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science
  • Exceptional Achievements in Support of PG Education and Research – Humanities: Frank Mikus, Paris Centre Manager
  • Exceptional Achievements in Support of PG Education and Research – Social Sciences: Sarah Marsh, Postgraduate Recruitment and Support Officer, SSPSSR.

During the event the semi-final of the Kent Three Minute These (3MT) competition also took place. PhD student, Dawn Nicholson from the School of Psychology was chosen by the judges as the winner for her presentation: Transforming Group Decisions from Grim to Great: The Power of the Premortem. She will now represent Kent at the national competition held later this year.

Finally, there were four prizes for the posters on display by postgraduate students. They were awarded as follows:

  • Outstanding Research Poster – Humanities: Sophie Chavarria, How in(famous) are Roman actresses?
  • Outstanding Research Poster – Social Sciences: Courtney Allen, Becoming Bicultural through Romantic Relationships: Is it Possible?
  • Outstanding Research Poster – Sciences: Jed Hugh Askew, Simple Synthesis of Colour-Changing Compounds
  • Outstanding Research Poster – People’s Choice: Courtney Allen, Becoming Bicultural through Romantic Relationships: Is it Possible?
