An expert at the University on Polish theatre has been awarded a major prize by that nation’s international theatre institute.

Professor Paul Allain was awarded the Witkacy Prize for promoting Polish theatre abroad by the Polish Section of the International Theatre Institute. The announcement was made on 27 March, which is World Theatre Day.

The Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy) Prize is an annual award for outstanding achievement in the promotion of Polish theatre throughout the world. The Prize has been awarded since 1983.

Professor Allain, Dean of the Graduate School at the University, has now been invited to travel to Poland to take part in an upcoming theatre festival to mark the award.

He said: ‘I am delighted to receive the Witkiewicz Prize. The selection is made by a jury of distinguished Polish artists, critics and scholars from all sections of Polish theatre and as such it represents a great honour.’

Paul Allain, who is Professor of Theatre and Performance at the University’s School of Arts, is author and editor of many works on Polish theatre, most recently as co-editor of 2015’s Voices from Within: Grotowski’s Polish Collaborators.
