Bill Papas was born on 15 July 1927 in Ermelo in the Transvaal, South Africa. His first published cartoon featured in the Cape Times in 1951, after which he worked Drum Magazine and the Johannesburg Star. After living in London briefly in the early 1950s, he returned in 1959 where he workd alongside David Low at the Guardian. He also contributed to Punch and the Sunday Times. Later in life he began a self-syndication service, supplying cartoons to the Los Angeles Times, Newsday, and other US and Canadian papers.
This collection contains over 300 original cartoons by Papas. It is largely uncatalogued but a listing is available, so please contact specialcollections@kent.ac.uk for more information.
