    Areas of law

    The cases often raise interesting legal and factual issues. Working on real life cases can also help you to further your understanding of subjects such as contract or tort law, which you will study as part of your degree.  

    You’ll have the opportunity to see law in action and deepen your understanding in areas of law such as:

    • immigration/asylum and citizenship
    • employment
    • housing
    • family
    • public law
    • welfare benefits
    • wills and probate

    Working on real life cases can also help you to further your understanding of subjects such as contract or tort law, which you will study as part of your degree.

    How you can get involved

    Clinical Option Module

    The Clinical Option is a module where you are assessed for academic credit as part of your undergraduate degree. It provides an opportunity for students to work in-depth in the Clinic on a legal case involving local clients.

    It is a chance to experience what it means to take responsibility for somebody’s legal problem as well as develop valuable skills in legal research, drafting and communicating with clients.

    The module also pushes you to reflect deeply on what you have learnt from experiencing the law in action.

    Co-curricular activities to get involved in

    A few examples of what you might do

    • Attend the popular weekly Clinic Hub – attend the Hub each week to participate in lively discussions about cases the Clinic is dealing with and find out about upcoming events.
    • Sign up for the Clinic Volunteer Programme – spend 5 weeks volunteering in the Clinic, getting information from people who need legal advice and experiencing what it is like to work in a legal environment
    • Join an Action Group – delve further into areas of law you are passionate about by joining one of the action groups. You may get to carry out legal research and discuss case strategies with one of the Clinic supervisors or work on a project.
    • Be part of an Evening Advice Session – act as a clerk taking detailed notes of meetings in which practising lawyers interview give advice to clients.

    Participating student volunteers can earn Employability Points for the chance to apply for exclusive internships, work placements, training and more.
