Josue Paz is currently working in digital design and marketing following his graduation in MSc Marketing in 2021, and using learnings from the case studies he worked on as part of his course in his everyday tasks.
What was your dream job as a child, and what is your dream job now?
From a young age, I was very drawn to art and creative outlets. As I continued my studies, I was able to channel these interests into digital design and marketing. This allowed me to strike the perfect balance between my creativity and commercial work. My dream job is to be a Creative Director at a major publication or brand.
Why did you choose the Kent Business School?
I chose Kent Business School specifically for its Marketing curriculum; it stood out to me as exceptionally comprehensive and well-structured. The modules within the Marketing programme are perfectly tailored to equip students with the precise skillset and tools necessary to thrive in the dynamic field of marketing today. This alignment with my career goals and the reputation of Kent Business School for excellence in business education solidified my decision to pursue my studies here.
What are some of your favourite memories, achievements and experiences?
The entirety of my degree was conducted online due to the pandemic, so unfortunately there weren’t as many memorable experiences as I might have had under normal circumstances. It was enjoyable to have group presentations as they provided great opportunities to network and meet other students, albeit solely online.
What have you been up to since graduating?
I took some time off to travel and do ‘normal’ things the pandemic restricted – I needed some inspiration. I’ve started working full-time and I also have a marketing consultancy, whereby I can take on new clients and projects. It’s exciting work since clients can range from SMEs to government departments and executing a campaign is always a rewarding experience.
What does your role involve? What do you like about it the most, and what are the most challenging aspects?
My current role involves the development and execution of visual strategies as well as maintaining brand identity and recognition. This includes print and online media. The best part is leading action plans and strategies for the brand and seeing them come to fruition. The most challenging aspect is remaining competitive and continuously bringing a fresh perspective and new ideas.
How do you apply the knowledge and skills you gained during your studies in your job, and what career advice would you give students and fellow alumni?
By referring to case studies and examples I encountered during my studies. They serve as an excellent guide to tackling real-world challenges and applying them to provide solutions. I’d advise marketing students and alumni to use these resources and continue the practice of researching, reviewing publications and case studies, as they keep you focused and adept in the industry.
What are your future plans / aspirations?
Future plans include further developing my consultancy business by employing a team that would allow me more freedom to work and represent brands of interest full-time, not just on a project basis.
What advice would you give to current students doing your course?
The University of Kent excels in providing an abundance of resources to support student success. From excellent facilities to a wide array of academic tools, students have access to everything they need to thrive. While some may initially perceive assigned readings as tedious, they serve as the cornerstone for fostering creative and critical thinking skills. As you progress through your coursework and embark on your dissertation journey, you begin to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for these foundational materials.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of Kent Business School, where the breadth of information, expertise of professors, and diverse opportunities for skill development have been invaluable. The environment at Kent Business School truly nurtures aspiring marketing professionals, allowing them to cultivate the expertise and acumen necessary for success in the field.
