Foundation requirements

If you do not have the qualifications, study skills or English language ability you need to take the degree of your choice, you can apply for one of our foundation programmes. We offer two types of foundation programmes: an honours degree with a foundation year and the International Foundation Programme (IFP).

For honours degrees with a foundation year, entry requirements vary depending on the degree you are applying to. You can check the requirements here.

You can study the International Foundation programme at the University of Kent International College (UK IC), run in collaboration with Oxford International on our Canterbury Campus. The International Foundation programme is for international students who may not meet the academic or English language requirements. Undergraduate requirements

The University considers Ghanaian students for undergraduate study who have completed the SSCE (Senior School Certificate of Education) in a minimum of five subjects, having achieved a minimum grade C or 6 in each subject. Higher average grades may be required depending on the entry requirements of the degree programme to be taken after successful completion of the foundation course, and who have taken a further acceptable qualification. The following further qualifications are acceptable for entry to our undergraduate programmes:Foundation courses
Students should have satisfactorily completed a foundation course, either at a UK based college, or a college in Ghana which is acceptable to the University of Kent. Candidates should check with the University that the foundation course will be acceptable prior to starting the foundation course. All applicants with a foundation qualification will be considered on an individual basis.Ordinary National Diploma/National Diploma (OND/ND)
Students should have satisfactorily completed an (Ordinary) National Diploma with an overall grade between lower credit and distinction depending on the degree subject applied for. For some subjects, such as science, we may request that you send in a copy of your syllabus with your application.Higher National Diplomas (HND)
Students should have satisfactorily completed a Higher National Diploma with at least a lower credit grade.Ghanaian degree programmes
A successfully completed first year of a Ghanaian degree programme with good grades may qualify students for year 1 entry.Students may also gain entry to year 1 of our undergraduate degree programmes if they have successfully completed 1 or 2 years of an undergraduate degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (or equivalent) and seek to transfer to Kent for the remainder of their degree.

Some, but not all, postgraduate programmes require your undergraduate degree to have a related major. Some postgraduate programmes may require work experience in a relevant field or at a certain level.

The University considers students for postgraduate study who have completed a four year honours degree (BA/BSc/BEng) achieving a good result from a reputable overseas institution or a good UK honours degree.

Applicants will also need to meet University of Kent's standard English language requirements. These are set at a level that meets both the academic needs of the University and the minimum requirements for a Tier 4 (General) student visa.

Applicants for the International Foundation Programme or pre-sessional English programmes are required to have a UKVI-recognised SELT (Secure English Language Test). These must be taken at one of the UKVI-approved test centres.

Pre-sessional course information

If you need to raise your English language skills, you can attend one of our intensive pre-sessional courses in English for Academic Purposes. Satisfactory achievement on one of these courses can be used to meet Kent's English language entry requirements in place of other external language examinations.
