PhD student Graduate Teaching Assistant in Film
 Liam Creighton

About

Liam is a film-maker and researcher based in London. His postgraduate research is rooted in practice-as-research methodology, and is an exploration of ‘middling’ parts of the UK that have been overlooked by the film industry. By shooting ethnographic and experimental documentary films and stills it is possible to discover what elements of these places might be combined to create a cinematic and communicable ‘genius loci’ or sense of place.
Liam’s graduate research is supported by a Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship.
He holds an MA with distinction in Filmmaking from the London Film School (where he was supported by a Screen Skills bursary) and a 1st class BA Hons in Film Studies from the University of Kent.

Forthcoming publication: “Scenes from a Marriage: The Personal and the Political in The Americans“, in Moments in Television, Manchester University Press, editor Dr. Sarah Cardwell

Research interests

Working Title: “England’s Forgotten Towns: Illuminating the Cinematic Potential of English Non-Places Through Narrative Cinema”

Liam’s work explores the cinematic potential of Middle England through an interdisciplinary approach that combines cultural geography with ethnographic and phenomenological filmmaking.
He is also mapping the settings of every cinematically released fiction feature film in the BFI archive in order to find out which parts of the UK have attracted the attention of the film industry, and which have been overlooked.
