Esther Kiburi

Esther Kiburi sees herself as a Socio-Sonic artist, with a mission of using her artistry to make a difference within her immediate environment. She enjoys creating innovative sounds as well as capturing sounds from her immediate vicinity, using technology to push the boundaries and expectations of the digitally created or recorded sound. In her artistry, she embraces context rather than recognisability, feeling rather than rhythm- although depending on how much you are in tune with self, there’s some rhythmic quality to feeling- resulting patterns than initial progressions. Her goal is simple, to invite the listener into her interpretation of “things” sonically.

She is currently pursuing a practice-as research PhD focused on developing a creative multi-modal framework for the presentation of academic research. To test out this framework, she will be looking at how space - digital, artistic and geographical - has been used to highlight gendered sexual harassment of women within the public transport system in Nairobi, Kenya.
