Inspirational teaching
Taught by staff with both academic and industrial experience, our innovative programmes are based on leading-edge research topics, vital in a field that advances so quickly. They combine theory with practical and project work, so that you turn ideas into real systems and designs.
You benefit from a diverse range of teaching, both in terms of research interests and professional backgrounds. Lecturers include academics with years of experience in university teaching and research, and industry practitioners with extensive commercial experience.
The lecturing has been brilliant and I’ve learned so much.
Research excellence
Our high-quality topical research has had significant national and international impact, and our expertise allows us to respond rapidly to new developments. We consistently win funding from UK research councils, European research programmes and government agencies.
In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), our rated highly for research intensity. Our 30 academic staff and over 130 postgraduate students and research staff support a high level of research activity. We have a thriving student population studying in a friendly, supportive teaching and research environment.
We promote innovative and interdisciplinary research and host three research groups:
Impressive prospects
We equip you with the essential skills for
a successful career. As well as enhancing your professional skills, we also
develop your transferable skills such as communication, teamwork,
problem-solving and computer literacy.
As the fields of computer technology, telecommunications and consumer electronics evolve rapidly, our graduates have found employment in varied careers. Graduate have been involved with developing the next generation of mobile telephones, creating animated human models, and employing computer-based techniques in a hospital environment. Many graduates also extend their studies by registering for MSc and PhD programmes.
Our digital design graduates have found employment in graphic design, 3D modelling and animation, multimedia marketing, post-production, web development, computer programming, e-commerce, software development and telecommunications.
Our links with business locally, nationally and internationally provide excellent year in industry opportunities. We also hold events where you can meet potential employers. Our Digital Media Hub gives our digital design students the chance to gain real-world commercial experience.
It is a great course, because it gives you a taste of everything.
Professional recognition
A kite mark of our global distinction and rigorous academic teaching is reflected in our Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) accreditation. This is under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council. Our accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).
An accredited degree provides you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and
skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered
Engineer (CEng). Some employers
recruit preferentially from accredited degrees and an accredited degree is
likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to
international accords. Our programmes in Computer
Systems Engineering and Electronic and Communications Engineering provide a broad grounding in these fields.
Engineering Programmes at Kent have been continuously accredited by the IET for over 30 years. The School of Engineering is an IET Academic Partner.
The School has several visiting industrial professors who contribute to the strong industrial relevance of our programmes.
Location
We are based at the Canterbury campus. Recently refurbished, the Jennison Building is located in a beautiful setting adjacent to woodland and a pond, with plenty of spaces to study and relax. Everything you need on campus is within walking distance, including a general store, a bookshop, bank, a medical centre and a pharmacy. You can go off campus to explore the city's medieval buildings, historic pubs and an array of shops. London is just an hour away by train.
