About
Mark is committed to improving distance and flexible learning provision and has experience in all stages of the development and delivery of distance learning, including degree programmes and professional courses online. He joined the University of Kent in August 2012 to lead on distance and blended learning development. He works extensively with our partner FutureLearn to develop and deliver short courses (MOOCs) and further courses such as 'Expert Tracks' and 'microcredentials'.
Mark originally read Mathematics at the University of Nottingham where he also completed his PGCE. After qualifying he taught at a Nottinghamshire comprehensive but soon returned to study, gaining an MSc in Computing at Staffordshire University. This led to a research post and in 2004 where he completed his PhD, focussing on applications of artificial intelligence to environmental monitoring. Building on his experience and interest in both teaching and technology, Mark then joined the University of East London's distance learning team to define and refine suitable models for distance learning programmes, and to write and review interactive materials.
