Roger Vickerman is Editor in Chief of this new publication.
The International Encyclopaedia of Transportation – containing almost 600 articles – brings a cross-cutting and integrated approach to all aspects of transportation from a variety of interdisciplinary fields including engineering, operations research, economics, geography and sociology edited by Professor Roger Vickerman Emeritus Professor of European Economics at the school. Roger’s research focuses on the relationship between transport (especially infrastructure) and economic development; regional development and integration in the European Union.
The Encyclopedia emphasises the interaction between different aspects of research, offers new solutions to modern-day problems related to transportation.
‘Each of its nine sections is based around familiar themes but brings together the views of experts from different disciplinary perspectives.’ Vickerman explained ‘Each section is edited by a subject expert who has commissioned articles from a range of authors representing different disciplines, different parts of the world and different social perspectives.’
‘Some articles provide a technical introduction to a topic whilst others provide a bridge between topics or a more future-oriented view of new research areas or challenges. The end result is a reference work that offers researchers and practitioners new approaches, new ways of thinking and novel solutions to problems.’
The nine sections are structured around the following themes:
Transport Economics (Editor: Maria Borjesson, Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, Sweden)
Transport Safety and Security (Editor: Per Garder, University of Maine, ME, USA)
Freight Transport and Logistics (Editor: Kevin Cullinane, University of Gothenburg, Sweden)
Traffic Management (Editor: Edward Chung, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong SAR)
Transport Modelling and Data Management (Editor: Chandra Bhat, University of Texas at Austin, TX, USA)
