A synopsis of the curriculum
The aim of the module is to extend the learning of students and expose them to the forefront of pharmaceutical sciences, enabling them to study the subject in greater depth relating specifically to novel therapeutic agent. Topics will include:-
• Cancer Chemotherapeutic Agents
• Carbohydrates as Drugs
• Drugs for the treatment of asthma and COPD
• Development of antibiotics

2000 word, essay assignment - 40%
2 hour Examination – 60%
The pass mark for each individual assessment is 40%. All assessments must be passed in order to pass the module.
Students will be directed, as appropriate, to the primary literature and review articles available from the journal collections of the University.

On successfully completing the module students will be able to:
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the concepts underpinning advanced therapeutic agents.
Demonstrate a critical awareness and understanding of current problems and/or new insights associated with therapeutic agents and their design.
Identify and resolve complex issues in the topics covered, both systematically and creatively.
Critically assess relevant scientific literature and communicate their conclusions clearly to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

On successfully completing the module students will be able to:
Show the necessary skills needed to undertake further training of a professional nature.
Solve problems relating to qualitative and quantitative information, extending to situations where evaluations have to be made on the basis of limited information.
Demonstrate time-management and organisational skills, as evidenced by the ability to plan and implement efficient and effective modes of working, and self-management and organisational skills with the capacity to support life-long learning.
Demonstrate the study skills needed for continuing professional development and professional employment.
