Dr Lavinia Brydon, Lecturer in Film and Media in the School of Arts, will be giving an introductory talk for a screening of Derek Jarman’s The Garden (1990) as part of LGBT History Month 2020.
The screening will be part of a series of celebration the life and work of Derek Jarman organised by the Centre for Gender Sexuality and Writing, in collaboration with the School of Arts, the Medical Humanities Network, and the Gulbenkian Cinema.
Derek Jarman (1942-1994) was a filmmaker, artist and gay rights activist. He was outspoken about his personal struggle with AIDS, and was a lead campaigner in the campaign to repeal Section 28, which banned the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality in schools. Jarman directed many feature, short and documentary films, including Caravaggio (1986), Wittgenstein (1993), The Last of England (1987) and Jubilee (1978). The School of Arts dedicated building, the Jarman Building, is named in his honour.
The celebration will be held on Wednesday 12 February 2020. First Dr Alexandra Parsons (Queen Mary University of London) will speak about Jarman’s memoirs and activism based on her forthcoming monograph Derek Jarman’s Life Writing (Manchester 2020). The talk will take place from 4pm to 5.30pm in Darwin Lecture Theatre 3, and is free to attend.
This talk will be followed by the screening of The Garden at 7pm in the Gulbenkian Cinema, introduced by Lavinia. The film, which follows a gay couple whose idealistic existence is interrupted and a cast of iconic religious figures, focuses on Christianity and what it meant to be gay in the 20th century. The film is set against the backdrop of Jarman’s coastal home in Dungeness, Kent.
