From scavenging around campus, to relaxing in beanbags for some serious Mario Kart gameplay, we really hope Welcome Week has settled our new students in well.
In case you missed it, last week was Welcome Week, where we welcomed over 200 new students to the School of Anthropology and Conservation! It is a week full of events and activities designed to help new students make friends, familiarise themselves with their new surroundings and have a lot of fun.
Kicking off our Welcome Week was the division-wide scavenger hunt, where new students from all four schools competed to win prizes. Entrants were given a ‘shopping list’ of shots around campus to take a team photographs of, upload to social media with the hashtag #wwscavenge22, in time for the awards ceremony. Our school teams included The Killers, Black Widow and Beckett, but well done to ‘Banana Man’ from the School of Psychology who scooped the overall prize.
On Tuesday afternoon, we hosted a welcome drinks reception for our new Stage 1 students in the School’s stunning double-volume reception and student social area in the Marlowe building. This was an opportunity for staff and students to meet one-on-one and get to know each other. We had a record-breaking turnout, which, paired with the excitement at being able to hang out and chat face-to-face, made for a fantastic, buzzing atmosphere. It certainly set a great tone for the year ahead – one which we are all certainly looking forward to!
“I was so pleased to see so many of our new students. This was the first time in three years that we’ve been able to all be together in person, and I could see that our new students are going to help bring back the feeling of community that makes SAC great.” Dr Brandon Wheeler, Director of Education and Senior Lecturer in Evolutionary Anthropology told us.
On Wednesday, all of our new UG and PG students had the chance to unwind together and feel more at home at ‘The Chill Zone’. Who wouldn’t feel at home with beanbags, board games, and Mario Kart!
Thursday was the start of KentUnion’s Welcome Fair, which was a massive success! The sun was shining, new students joined societies, and President Lewis Smith passionately promoted the Conservation Society, along with fellow committee members.
Our Anthropology Society also gave 110% on the Friday, displaying all the bones!
We really hope you have a beautiful Autumn; welcome to (or back to!) the School of Anthropology and Conservation. What a great start to the first term of our 2022-23 Academic Year!
