Accommodation for couples and families

If you're searching for accommodation with your partner, our Keynes or Darwin studio rooms are ideal for couples.

Unfortunately we're unable to offer family-friendly accommodation. Visit our living off-campus webpage for helpful tips on choosing the right property as well as picking a trustworthy landlord or letting agent.

Lifestyle Moderate Rooms

We have a number of flats across our campus set aside for students who would prefer a quieter living environment.

Students living in these areas are expected to adopt a moderate lifestyle in respect of alcohol, loud music and sound, and the way in which they socialise within the accommodation.

We do not guarantee a permanently quiet or alcohol-free environment, but grouping likeminded people together is intended to support this choice of lifestyle.

These areas are not monitored more closely than others, as residents are expected to independently self-manage their living environment. However, there are mechanisms for addressing those who persistently fail to live in accordance with expectations.

We set aside rooms in all our undergraduate accommodation areas, however there is limited availability meaning we cannot guarantee that all applicants will be successful. However, if you would like to live in lifestyle moderated rooms you will need to include this request when making your accommodation application online.

Discount schemes

We currently have two accommodation discount schemes students can apply for:

Open Day Show Rooms for new and returning UG and PG students (Canterbury)

If you visited one of our Open or Applicant Days, you may remember we like to have a range of student accommodation open across campus for prospective students and their families to view. To be part of the scheme you'll need to show your room at between 8-14 events during the academic year and in return will receive a 5% discount on your accommodation fees.

How to apply: Select 'yes' when asked about the scheme during your accommodation application. We'll then email you closer to arrival so you can decide if you still want to participate or opt-out. Please note spaces are limited and applications are considered on a first-come, first-served basis.

ResLife Ambassador for returning students (Canterbury and Medway)

RLAs are students living on campus who help form their college community and plan events for their college residents. It's a great opportunity to get flexible work experience alongside studying and save money on your rent as RLA's receive a discount on their accommodation fees.

How to apply: Applications open every Spring so keep an eye on the ResLife Team webpage where more information and applications will be available nearer the time. These roles are popular so it's always a good idea to apply early. Please note you need to apply to become an RLA separately from your accommodation application.

Other opportunities and support are available across campus. This includes plenty of part-time/casual employment positions throughout the year ranging from catering outlets (just stop by and ask), HousekeepingSports, Open Day events and more.

What accommodation can I apply for if I am...

A short course, exchange, Erasmus or Junior Year Abroad student?

This will depend on the length of your course and level of study. If you are a postgraduate student and your course at Kent lasts for 52 weeks you can apply for Woolf College. If your course is shorter than this you can apply for Darwin Houses. Darwin Houses are dedicated to housing short course students meaning you'll have plenty of opportunities to make friends with students in a similar position.

If you are an undergraduate and your course at Kent lasts for 39 weeks you can apply for any of our undergraduate accommodation options. However, if your course lasts less 39 weeks you can apply for:

In the event we do have extra capacity within our other accommodation options this will then be opened up and offered to students on shorter academic programmes too.

If your course is taught at the Medway campus you can apply to live in Pier Quays no matter the length of your course.

You can apply online using our Accommodation Portal.

A pre-sessional student?
This will depend on the length of your course and level of study.

If you are studying at postgraduate level and your course at Kent lasts for 52 weeks you can apply for Woolf College. If your course is shorter than this (and you will complete your degree before 2023) you can apply for Darwin Houses. Darwin Houses are dedicated to housing short course students meaning you'll have plenty of opportunities to make friends with students in a similar position.

If you are studying at undergraduate level and your course lasts for 39 weeks you can apply for:

If your course is taught at the Medway campus you can apply to live in Pier Quays no matter the length of your course.

You can apply online using our Accommodation Portal.

Students with a foundation year, year in industry or year abroad

Foundation Year
If your course includes a foundation year then you can live on campus in any of our undergraduate accommodation during your foundation year, and you apply online just the same as all students seeking accommodation at Kent. As long as you apply before 30 June and meet our criteria you will be guaranteed to receive a room offer from us

You can continue to live on campus for your 'official' first year and the remainder of your course should you wish as you will be classed as a returning student.

Year or Term Abroad and Year in Industry
If your course includes a year abroad, or in industry, you can apply to live on campus again afterwards for your final year as you will be classed as a returning student. You'll just need to apply online as normal in the year your final year will be taking place (for example January 2024 for a September 2024 start).

If your course includes a year in industry and you have a placement local to the Canterbury or Medway campus and wish to live on campus during this year you are also welcome to apply as a returning student.

Alternatively, if you are studying at another institution for a term as part of your course you can apply to live on campus for the start/remainder of that year. As an undergraduate you will be able to apply for:

As a postgraduate student you will be able to apply for Darwin Houses.

If your course is taught at the Medway campus you can apply to live in Pier Quays no matter the length of your course.
