Professor John Strange

Emeritus Professor of Experimental Physics

About

Professor Emeritus John Strange is a physicist with continuing research interests in nuclear magnetic resonance applied to the study of atomic motion, relaxation and imaging of solids and porous media. He is group leader for condensed matter and materials physics at Kent.

Over the course of his career, John has edited three books, given plenary lectures at international meetings and had over 150 papers published in learned journals. Research grants and contracts exceeding £1m have been awarded during the past ten years, mainly by EPSRC, BTG, MAFF and British industry. He has been on organising committees for international conferences meeting in London, Canterbury, Italy, Belgium, Germany, France and the USA.

Research interests

Current projects include:

Development and application of NMR techniques for investigation of interactions and microdynamics in liquids and solids, particularly nano-crystalline materials

Diffusion mechanism and point defect structures in molecular and ionic crystals with pioneering techniques using high temperature and pressure

NMR imaging (as a means of materials investigation

Expertise in the characterisation of porous media.
