English Language and Linguistics is an ideal complement to subjects where an understanding of how language works is important. Language powers drama and plays a central role in everything we as human beings do.
This programme explores the many facets of language, allowing you to tailor your studies to suit your individual interests and possible career paths. While the focus will be on English, you will also explore the meaning of language more generally, and discover what language systems have in common.

All students within the Faculty of Humanities can apply to spend a Term or Year Abroad as part of their degree at one of our partner universities in North America, Asia or Europe. You are expected to adhere to any progression requirements in Stage 1 and Stage 2 to proceed to the Term or Year Abroad.

Teaching is through workshops, seminars, lectures and practical projects. Drama and Theatre modules are continuously assessed based on coursework, projects and presentations, performances, essays and dissertations.
On average, you have two one-hour lectures each week plus two seminar classes of two hours each. However, this varies depending on the material and the nature of the module, and there may be additional workshops, discussion groups and practical sessions. You have group or one-to-one tutorials for research projects and dissertations, and also have tutorials with your lecturers and seminar leaders to discuss coursework and assignments. In addition, you have access to further information and support via Moodle, our interactive web-based learning platform.
At each stage, some modules are continuously assessed, while others combine coursework and examination. Stage 2 and 3 modules count towards your final degree result.
For a student studying full time, each academic year of the programme will comprise 1200 learning hours which include both direct contact hours and private study hours. Drama and Cinematics at Kent scored 94% overall in The Complete University Guide 2021 and 90.4% in The Times Good University Guide 2020.
Linguistics at Kent was ranked 2nd for graduate prospects and 9th overall in The Complete University Guide 2021.
The Department has developed partnerships with some of the major players in theatre in the UK including: Battersea Arts Centre, the RSC and The Gate. Selected programmes offer you the opportunity to go on work placements which can lead to future full-time employment, while the range of modules we offer ensures you develop key skills such as planning and organisation, teamworking, adaptability and leadership.
Past graduates have become theatre producers, actors, literary managers, journalists, authors, directors, performers, scriptwriters for television, stand-up comedians, casting agents, event managers, arts administrators, community theatre officers for local councils, drama teachers, and many have gone on to postgraduate study.
We also support past students to set up companies and remain in Kent with the Graduate Theatre Scheme.
Single and joint honours programmes in English Language and Linguistics help you acquire high-level skills in communication, problem solving, group work, IT and numeracy, which will be very important in your future career.
The programme prepares students for a wide range of careers where an in-depth understanding of how language functions is essential. These include advertising, journalism and professional writing, media, the law, public relations, marketing and sales, publishing, teaching at all levels, company training, broadcasting, and the civil or diplomatic services. The single honours programme is particularly useful for students who are thinking of English teaching either in the UK or abroad.
